my last minute effort for a racing maxi to race in the puch polini E50 class this weekend in atwater. polini cup final race of the season. lots of people will be there from all over. i will be there. race or no race for me. i have some time tonight. i have some time tomorrow. maybe maybe, we will see. and the bravo too? not sure. questions with no answers. im more excited about racing a maxi than anything else right now.

stock two shoe plate with super clutch arms. destroyed. this was a first pressing super clutch, check the date, it’s 08. our fresh 09 new ones have better lining now.

it’s always the way E50 clutches are when you’re going faster than stock. they break. eventually, no matter how you make em. it’s one thing you will always have to replace over time.

new version is a two shoe plate with kick start arms. it’s been working good for a while now. i have this set up on the ltd. it’s got a polini with a malossi 4 petal and a phbg. it’s a little bit fast. it’s ok. i like the two shoe better than the three. it’s my preference. i know how to tune a two shoe for what i want. i use stock springs, tightened up a bit. i want some spin out before it grabs, but not too much. i set it for even less spin out when i had a gilardoni. a clutch brace might have saved this clutch. perhaps. two bad no one makes a two shoe clutch brace. in theory a three shoe is a better clutch, but in my experience a two shoe does what i want it to and fails me less.

jen’s purple maxi. i was merely a consultant on this one. it’s got the puch reed kit, that’s a tomos alukit modified for puch. the one on her bike is one of two prototypes for this kit. it’s 44mm, not the normal 45mm like they are now. we put a malossi 4 petal reed block on with some bent hose to a phbg carburetor, and it fits quite nice.

this moped is so fun to ride. it’s got zero porting. the reed kit matches almost perfect to a stock case. i should get a before picture so you can witness the full transformation, but you can imagine, a regular stock shitty maxi, right. visualize that and the metamorphosis that took place.

over 6 months later. the magnum resurfaced on the streets of san francisco in a strange and distorted form. stolen merchandise cover up paint job style. taped on flashlight. jumbo motorcycle buddy seat, golden biturbo, new gilardoni, HPI CDI and a mini bronze lever, they don’t add up. something was amiss. i wish i took a picture of how it looked when i first saw it. i could hardy recognize it. thanks to the little birdies in the sky with the sharp eyes for spotting it. dude who had it had gone on a shopping spree at 1977 mopeds. he got a new gilardoni, with metrakit head, intake and a biturbo! and probably more. he had rigged a way to mount the biturbo without re-welding. and some other things i think. he even bought an HPI CDI from us at treats online!. so i felt bad for the guy if he really did buy it from some guy in civic center. I helped him get his stuff off the bike before i took it back. now i have my frame, wheels, shocks, most of the front forks, my ported E50 bottom end with the rito crank, that i think is completely destroyed on the inside, gears and all, and i got my 21 race carb too. i’m not going to speculate on how it all went down, i dont really care that much. the dude who had it was cool and let me get it back with out any trouble. the whole deal sucks the most for me, and it sucks for him too. but i guess that’s why you don’t buy stolen mopeds in civic center, or you should buy them, and then post them to see who’s it is, so they can get it back.
im just glad to see it back, i had let it go completely. and had no hope of finding it in any form. so this is pretty amazing to get this much back. all im missing is the custom pipe i made, the gilardoni, malossi reed block, E12 malossi air filter, gilardoni intake, flywheel cover, flywheel, stater plate, voltage regulator, taillight, all the wires and fuel line, my crappy seat, and i think that’s it. i guess the guy who had it has some of this stuff in thrashed form, somewhere at his dads house or something? but it’s probably just a pile of junk for the most part.
now i get to start this website all over again. ha. i can build the same moped twice!

here’s the rigged up flashlight headlight, a technique i myself have used in a pinch. the look is completed with that sick little bronzy lever.

my bottom end. the bottom end west coast ben helped me bore out to fit the gilardoni. the bottom end that lasted many a year and many a mile. sad to see it so destroyed. the cases seem to be fine, and rito crank had some play on the cod rod, not sure if it’s salvageable. the clutch and clutch bell are messed up a little, not sure how bad. and the gears were completely locked up, then freed themselves as if there was some piece of something stuck in em. well see.

all the bolts for the clutch cover are completely utterly stripped. they look like round allen bolts, where your allen wrench would be a circle instead of a hex o gram. it’s missing the starting actuator lever thing, and the funny thing is that the previous care taker, meticulously stripped all the black paint off the engine, restoring it to it’s original aluminum color. in fact the whole frame and wheels were stripped of their old paint and repainted red and black. supposedly when dude got it from civic center it was hastily spray painted in some kind of camouflage paint job to try and cover up the original black and green. i did make out with this new 2.5″ gazelle on the that’s on backwards. so i pretty much scored on this deal. ha. more to come
